Hutongs

Beijing Day Trips to explore the hutongs

The Beijing hutongs can in general be found in the area around the Forbidden City, but the most popular area is the Houhai & Drum/Bell Tower area, which roughly stretches from the North of Beihai Park in the Southeast to the Northwest corner of the 2nd Ring Road.

In the hutongs you can see what the old houses and courtyards of Beijing looked like and experience a bit of the local lifestyle.
Explore the Hutongs

The most common (read: touristic) way to explore the hutongs is by tri-cycle (or rickshaw), where you take place in a little car (max. 2 persons) that is peddled along the narrow lanes by the driver. We can of course arrange this for you, but we also offer very interesting alternatives!

Why not leave the busy tourist trail and cycle yourself?! We can arrange for bicycles and take you on a tour around the hutongs. Of course we will give you additional information and explain a bit more about one of the most interesting areas of the old Beijing!

If you don’t feel like cycling and also don’t want to join the masses, another alternative is to do a walking tour through the hutongs. Of course we can cover less ground, but we will show you lots of interesting details!

The hutongs are also included in all the Beijing Day Trips sidecar tours.

Hutong tours usually last for about 2 hours. Prices of the trips upon request and do not include entrance fees of the actual sight(s) if any.
