Hutongs (胡同) are narrow streets or alleys which used to form the heart of Beijing and housed everyone who worked for the Emperor. A lot of these hutongs have been demolished (the character “拆”, pronounce as “chai”, is painted on the walls of houses that will be knocked down) to make place for modern real estate projects.
